Our experience with UK dealers exporting parts has been very mixed - mostly
it's been disappointing. There aren't many places legitimately breaking ur-
quattros. As far as the Club's information for 1997 is concerned, vehicles
stolen and not recovered (believed to have been broken for parts) outnumber two-
to-one the number known to have been legitimately scrapped by insurance
companies. Thus if you buy a second-hand body part from the UK, the odds are
quite good that you're benefitting from someone else's distress.
I make an exception to the above generallity for Sanburn of Coventry (who will
show you the whole wreck and hold the documentation for inspection, but are
_SODS_ to deal with remotely) and Halls of Nottingham. Dialynx have access to
a limited quantity of original parts at reduced prices, and also have some
aftermarket parts of their own - such as make-believe Sport bonnets and
fenders. Audi Only in Manchester (Dean Zaman) _had_ collected quite a few
bits, but I think Paul Beaurain cleaned them out for his rebuild.
A number of us in the UK Club are very concerned about the trade in dubious
parts, especially for export. We are actively considering what measures might
be appropriate and plan to present our ideas to the Annual General Meeting this
spring.
