fault codes

when checking the fault codes by using the connector on top of the fuel pump
relay- what is the procedure? ignition on or off- engine running or not-
what size of fuse???????????
        btw i have installed the new ignition wiring assembly that was my
christmas gift. the results are amazing. previously while idling there was
an occasional misfire, and when driving a lack of power around 3k-3500 rpm
now the misfire is gone and the engine pulls strongly to redline. while i
was checking under the hood i discovered that the emissions t connector at
the back of the valve cover was split- i have ordered the new part and i'll
bet that it solves my hot start problem. that'll be tomorrows job. i didnt
realise that the split was so hard to see- you really have to move things
around to see it. just wiggling the hoses didn't reveal the problem, but
when i got the trouble light right in there i could see the crack right on top.
