Mike's headed down the right track here.
There's a severe BTDT here.
When I did my first timing belt, I thought I would make life easy for
myself and not reattach the lower (or was it rear?) timing belt cover
and had a couple pieces of formed sheet metal and small bolts left over
when I was done.
I did have rather significant oil drainage, and I didn't even think
about the lower belt cover. A quick call to my local mechanic resulted
in him asking if I had any bolts left over of a specific size. Sure
enough, he described the two that I had sitting on the workbench.
Turns out that the bolts that hold on the lower timing belt cover, are
also the bolts that secure the _oil pump_ to the inside of the engine
block. Without those bolts in place, the pump is free to move a bit and
push oil out through those boltholes.
HTH!
