Oops! We just slipped into a semantic problem, easily resolved.
I reluctantly go along with the marketing travesty of calling the
Audi 100 a 5000 if imported between the years 1978-1988. But
it was always really a model 100; from 1970 to 1976, we had
the original C-type car, in the form of the 100, the 100s, the
100ls, the 100gl, and in Europe, even a 100 Coupe. The 1977 model
year in Europe brought forth the first C2-type 100, which was not
imported into the US until 1978. Beginning with 1989, the C3-type
finally gots its righteous and proper designation of 100 back.
Anyway, if I say 5000, I rarely am trying to make some kind of
specific (and largely artificial) distinction between the US and
global versions of this car. So, I may refer to late model 5000s and
mean model years after 1988. Sorry if this was confusing!
