In my experience I have NEVER had to replace a slave cylinder.  For me the 
master cylinder has been the one to fail, much in the same way as described.
This experience comes from an urQ several 5ks and a 4kq.  I'm sure that the 
slaves go some times, but I've never had to deal with it.  

I do agree that the MC in the 5kq is a PITA though ... you need to have 
an allen wrench that has been cut to fit in the space between the bolt 
head and the extension on the casting.  I found two things ... it is 
possible to purchase a rebuild kit (Beck/Arnley?), and some replacement 
MCs have the inlet casting extension repositioned to allow a normal 
allen wrench to be used.  I'm sorry that I don't have the details here, 
but I did post both the the q-list ... well, I found one ... see below ...
