The '92 on Audi wagons offer a third seat for kids, rear facing. I believe
Audi also stiffened the rear section to improve crash resistance; this could
potentially be an issue, with kids back there and very limited crush zones.
It's kinda nice having a big old engine block and crush zones out front, or a
trunk out back.

I drove a syncro vanagon for a while couple years back; very capable in bad
weather, good ground clearance, lots of room inside.  Remember, it's a van;
not a good comparison to driving the A6 wagon. Very practical,though,
although not very stylish, according to my wife. Don't think very many were
sold. Viscous differentials, they lock up when slip detected.
