re: v8 tranny dipstick

the reason why they took away the dipstick on the v8 is because the
dipstick reading is extremely sensitive to tranny fluid temperature
to give a correct reading.  the mechanic here plugs in the VAG 1551
laptop to verify tranny fluid temperature before doing a reading on
the dipstick.

many owners who bought dipsticks took readings at incorrect temperatures
and ended up filling in more ATF than needed.  that led to the excess
ATF leaking out leading to the well known smoking phenomenon.  no wonder
my car never smoked.. it never had excess ATF.
