I think you could buy the later cup holder insert for the storage tray under
the arm rest, as used in the A6 (at least circa 1997 cars?).  You'd have to
keep the armrest up while using it, and it is designed to hold soda-can size
drinks.  Basically, it looks like two shaped plastic inserts for the little
storage tray where the phone plugs into the center console.
