I just installed a rebuilt one into my 88 5KT. I got it from German
Transaxles of America in Oregon. It was $1375.00 exchange. Torque
converter was included, so was very detailed instalation and care
instructions. If a shop purchases it it is another 10-15% less.
My trans came in 3 boxes: converter, diff, and trans. They included
proper shim, that goes between the diff and the trans as well as O ring
for govenor. Govenor and axle flanges were not included. They provided
instructions for inspection and reinstalation of old ones. They also sold
me a quart of Audi synthetic lube for the diff. I used Castrol Synthec
DextronIII for trans. New input and pump shafts were also included.
Make sure that you replace coolant hoses for trans oil cooler(4) while
the trans is out.I also advise replacement of trans mounts and right
engine mount. You will need to remove down pipe and engine mount is
exposed. My car also needed accelerator cable. Shippin for the trans and
core was $160.00 from Oregon to NJ. They want exact same core back as the
trany they sent you. Otherwise they will not refund $350 portion of core
deposit. I installed it myself in the shop that belongs to one of my
patients. One of his mechanics was off so they let me use his lift.
It took 9hrs and I used their trans jack. I also rebuilt both axles.
So far so good. I can finde the number for the rebuilder in Oregon if
needed.
