I just installed a rebuilt one into my 88 5KT. I got it from German 
Transaxles of America in Oregon. It was $1375.00 exchange. Torque 
converter was included, so was very detailed instalation and care 
instructions. If a shop purchases it it is another 10-15% less.
My trans came in 3 boxes: converter, diff, and trans. They included 
proper shim, that goes between the diff and the trans as well as O ring 
for govenor. Govenor and axle flanges were not included. They provided 
instructions for inspection and reinstalation of old ones. They also sold 
me a quart of Audi synthetic lube for the diff. I used Castrol Synthec 
DextronIII for trans. New input and pump shafts were also included.
Make sure that you replace coolant hoses for trans oil cooler(4) while 
the trans is out.I also advise replacement of trans mounts and right 
engine mount. You will need to remove down pipe and engine mount is 
exposed. My car also needed accelerator cable. Shippin for the trans and 
core was $160.00 from Oregon to NJ. They want exact same core back as the 
trany they sent you. Otherwise they will not refund $350 portion of core 
deposit. I installed it myself in the shop that belongs to one of my 
patients. One of his mechanics was off so they let me use his lift.
It took 9hrs and I used their trans jack. I also rebuilt both axles.
So far so good. I can finde the number for the rebuilder in Oregon if 
needed.
