Audi purchase.

After mulling through these multitudes of messages for the past week I have
come to the conclusion that I am not only lacking any knowledge base but
probably the aptitude as well.  Please keep any response on the caveman
level.

Now that we have that covered please advise on the following.  I wish to
purchase a normal, run of the mill, stock Audi (US) mfg'd 1994 - 1997.  I
owned a 976 100LS which met it's early demise upon impact and have missed
dearly ever since.  Any particular year or model that may give me superior
performance and maintenance?  Also, any advice for my shopping trip would
be appreciated (oil dripping out of the tailpipe is a bad thing, right?).
