Re: Wet weather haltering under load

Hi!

I have a 1990 200t. I drove up from Cape Town to Welkom and the
weather was all wet all the way. I was running about 4200RPM all
the way at about 160-170km/h. All the way the car felt like it
was lurching a bit. I thought it to be a air leak somewhere. The
car was running lean when I was down at the coast in Cape Town.
It started to do the bit of lurching about a day before I left
Cape Town, the weather turned a bit damp, cold and windy on that
day. When I read this message of yours I thought we might be having
the same problem as I can't pinpoint the cause of it. It might be
a vacuum line leaking somewhere, but my only leak is the t-piece of
the crank breather lines. And since I've been here the last week I've
been experiencing excessive overboost (up to the point of fuel pump
cut-off under moderate loads), but the lurching is gone. I have also
sealed the hole in my exhaust, but the lurching stopped before I did
that. It hasn't rained since and the lurching hasn't happened.

I remember a while back on the list something about arcing. The
plug leads might be old and they might be arcing to one another. The
test method is to let the engine run at say about 3000RPM and then
then spray a fine mist of water over the cables. Any form of "lightning"
will indicate that the leads are sparking. (Check with the other
members about this as I am a mere amateur). If this is the case then
the best thing to do would be to replace the leads with new, and
better insulated, leads. I have a set of Magnecor RV-85 leads in my
future...but that future is way off as the set of 6 leads (I think
6, one extra to the coil) is about $100, but they're really good. I
have never changed the plug leads, and I don't know if anyone did it
before I got the car and I doubt they ever did.

Well, that's my 0.02c.

HTH.
