Yes, it was a 'private' email - though unsolicited.  Am I under any 
moral obligation to treat unsolicited abuse as a confidence between 
parties?

I agree - if someone emails me and says: "Excuse me, but I don't want to
be identified to the list - and I want to say ..." then they deserve fair
treatment.

Perhaps I should have paraphrased 'another lister' and asked for opinions?

Valid point.

I did not think that Eric's approach justified any considerate treatment 
on my behalf.  Nevertheless - he got it, and continues to get it - I have 
not posted the the remaining details, except in private responses to a 
few individuals.
