Airbox modification as seen on recent VW Golf GTi....
Hi!
I was at the local news agent a few days ago looking for the latest
issue of "Turbo and Performance Magazine". They didn't have it so I
looked at a VW magazine. In it the guys where doing exhaust and
breathing mods to a Golf GTi (Mk3). The airbox mod was interesting.
They just took the airbox cover that holds the air filter and cut
a bunch of circular holes into it and put a rectangular hole into
the one side. The holes were filled with a mesh to prevent icky
critters from getting in. The breathing was greatly improved with
a increase in power once they had advance the timing to match.
The airbox cover looks just like the one used for the K-Jet on the
Audi cars, so I assume the system is still using the K-Jet system.
I was just wandering if anyone has done such a mod to their airboxes?
The GTi also got a K&N air filter, but this was tested before the
airbox was drilled and it too gave some power increase so characteristic
of the K&N filters. The drilling even made the power jump more.
It looks like a tacky mod, but is it worthwhile?
