Well being a Brit living in the USA the aluminum spelling caught me out
first time I saw it. There are loads of other  examples. Remember..."two
nations separated by a common language!" 

The "Aluminium" spelling just wouldn't work in the USA for two reasons: 

1. Adam Sandler would have to re-work his "Thanksgiving Song" ..
("...aluminum foil..." etc). 

2. Muini-Mula doesn't sound as good as the rare alloy Muni-Mula ?
