Thai,

My recirc won't go on, either, if I have the unit set to defog/defrost
(probably because this would be bad for defogging -- the humid air would
just circulate inside).  If you set it to "Auto", though (i.e. standard
heating setting) it does come on just fine on my '97 A4 1.8T quattro,
regardless of the outside temperature.

I'm not much help on the CDs ... I thought it was a Sony Unit, but I'm
not sure.  It does require some extra care to take the CDs in/out of it,
though.
