This was probably done to improve weight distribution. The battery is a
heavy component that is relatively easy to move around the car without
large design changes. I don't really understand why the same model would
have the battery in different locations. Presumably, one position is better
than the other in most respects. Maybe this was done to satisify different
government requirements.
