the trouble is, America is too young to have a discernable "national
character" and probably too big to ever congeal, coalesce, around one.

But at least some of them know what kind of car I drive without asking. 
And many of them are really nice people.  Dumb?  people everywhere are
stoopid, it's just in America we have the freedom to express it...
