Re: Auto transmissions

The main thing is that the diff. (fdr) has a separate oil supply from the
tranny. It uses a synthetic gear oil. There is a seal between the trans
and the fdr. What happens is from heat, the synthetic gear oil evaporates.
When it does, the seal dries, trans fluid mixes and the tranny dies. It is
normal for the gear oil to evaporate a certain amt. The reason why it was
such a problem was because 85 and up Audi didn't recommend changing or
checking the fluid in the fdr(84 did). That's why there was a recall last
year to check and refill the fdr fluid. I use an a sealer on the tranny
side to prevent problems. It's not like one of those solvent type things.
It's cd-2. It has a synthetic base and is like tranny fluid, not paint
thinner. Synthetic trans fluid will wick through seals a little more than
conventional, so I figure the fdr seal will last a while. The second
problem is that the VW tranny can't handle lots of torque. I'm running in
excess of 2.0 bar. I do this on highways in third gear sometimes second to
keep from killing the tranny. I think the actual boost chip mod will yield
more power than me, but I coping with it fine. Tranny is good, too. 99%
synthetic, moly additive, Militec coming in today.
