What is a WX engine?

As far as I know, apart from the boot on the air mass sensor and the downpipe
assembly including the OXS sensor, the MB and the 1986 MC are pretty well
physically identical. MAC12 vs. MAC11, but you know more about that than I do.
So the 1988 ur-quattro was fitted, essentially, with an engine that had been
shipping in the USA for two years. A year later, the North American MC was
updated with a second knock sensor, new diagnostic connectors, and the MAC14 -
this variant never made it to the ur-quattro.
The North American implementations have a few extras such as activated carbon
canisters, etc.
