1986 4CSQ problem

Car: 1986 Audi 4000 CS Quattro
Miles: 140k (+/-)

I'm having a problem with my Audi and I was wondering if anyone has any
ideas. I'll try and list all the symptoms to give you a better idea of the
situation.

About a week ago I notice that my gas mileage was going down... The
computer generally reports about 24-26 MPG, but as of last week, it's been
down to 14-16 MPG. At the same time, I noticed that when I give the car
gas there was a little hesitation.

Three days ago it got much worse. The gas mileage is the same - 14-16 MPG,
but the hesitation is much more pronounced and happens all the time. I can
drive the car, but I have to be very careful when starting from a stop or
if I try to pass someone. Just because I press on the gas, it doesn't mean
the car will get going. (Although once I'm at the speed I need to go, I
have no trouble holding it.)

Here's an odd thing. When the car is stone cold, everything's fine. After
about 5 minutes or so it goes to pot. :(

Also, I guess about the same time the 'shift now for best fuel efficiency'
light stopped working. I figured it might just be the bulb, but in light
of the current problem, maybe not.

I went out today and got new plugs, which didn't help. Tomorrow I am going
to get a new cap and see if that helps, and if not, then I'll replace (or
rather HAVE replaced) the air filter.

One last item... The car has been running cooler then normal. The needle
doesn't move all that much, and the heater only blows out warm air. I have
no idea if this is related or not, but I figured I would mention it just
in case.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
