With a head gasket leak causing so much oil to vanish, you probably also have lots of oil in the coolant and probably the coolant is leaking into the cylinders as well. I wouldn't delay the repair, as it can cause some more serious problem (like warping the head). I haven't done this job yet and it doesn't look easy.

Sorry for the mixup.  Blame my own carelessness in my last note.  It is the VALVE cover gasket that I was told was leaking, not the HEAD gasket.  I realize that there is a big difference.  So, with this in mind, the same questions apply.  Can I fix it myself or should I let a mechanic handle it?
