Re: 87 CGT-questions

Hi Jon;

I replaced this gasket on my '91 200q. It was an easy job and took about
1 hour total. The original gasket was rubberized cork and was broken at the
bolts and leaking badly. The Audi replacement was the most beautiful gasket
I have ever seen - completely rubber with metal bushings bonded in at the
bolt holes to prevent over-compression! It doesn't leak a drop!

Your engine is probably different than my MC turbo, but as long as you
can get at the valve cover easily, the job is simple. Be careful not to
over-torque the valve cover bolts - they don't require much torque.

I do a lot of highway driving. I was told when I >purchased the car that
the head gasket was leaking slightly but that it was nothing critical for
the moment. That was almost a >year ago and now I'm wondering if I'm
risking a major repair if I just keep adding oil rather than changing the
gasket.

>With a head gasket leak causing so much oil to vanish, you probably also
have lots of oil in the coolant and probably the coolant is leaking into the
cylinders as well. I wouldn't delay the repair, as it can cause some more
serious problem (like warping the head). I haven't done this job yet and it
doesn't look easy.

>Sorry for the mixup. Blame my own carelessness in my last note. It is the
VALVE cover gasket that I was told was leaking, not the HEAD gasket. I
realize that there is a big difference. So, with this in mind, the same
questions apply. Can I fix it myself or should I let a mechanic handle it?
