84 Audi/VW wheels on an 86 4kq

Gang,

As lack of luck or multitude of miles would have it I ended up in a ditch
this weekend.  No major damage.  Busted foglight and scratched rim with
dirt in the bead.  Its leaking air and looks ugly.  As to the foglight well
I wanted to upgrade any way, what an excuse.

Here's my problem, I thought I would use a tire off my 84 coupe but little
did I know the lug bolt is larger on the 84q.  All this time I have been
saving the rims from my old GTI as spares as well as thinking I could
interchange with 84.

So the question is can I drill out the old lug holes to accomodate the
larger bolts.  And is this wise.
