After much wasted time this morning, I think that I have found out what
the problem was...

Yesterday, I topped off the coolant since it was a bit low.  I am sure
that the cap was on tight, but for some reason it didn't seal good.  So
most of the coolant steamed off/bubbled out this morning (with the
temperature gage reading normal).

Even though there was alot of coolant left, the digital gage went directly
into the "HOT" range just seconds after waiting 30min and restarting.  I
had noticed this before when I was having trouble with a small leak. 
After a fill-up with water, things now appear to be working normally.
