When you open and close the door they relieve excess pressure and vacuum.
When you drive on the highway with the windows open, there will be much
less air buffeting inside due to a place for it to escape. Buick had a
problem with air buffeting, so they (as per recall) drilled holes in the
rear deck to allow air to escape.
