    Hot coolant, perhaps? Does it  smell strongest when the heater is on?
Does the defroster fog the windshield when you first turn it on or fail to
clear the windshield completely? You may be experiencing the dreaded Audi
heater core leakage. Are you losing coolant from the reservoir? When the
core leaked on my '86 5kcstq, the coolant was running through the footwell
vents and pooling nicely in the passenger footwell.
