Thanks very much to all who quickly answered my post about where to 
get a cheap fuel pump for my '87 5KCSTQ.

The problem was indeed the pump.  Got a new Bosch from Adirondack for 
$157.00.  Now working fine.  

Learned that a whining pump should not be ignored.  The whine got
louder and louder over time--especially when the car was first
started early on cold mornings.  Moral:  if she starts whining
louder and louder in the morning...you better pay attention !  (yes,
I do mean the car !!!)
