Under what circumstances would a waterpump failure require a head rebuild
and major $? IMLPE waterpump failures are typically prefaced with detectable
leaking and/or bearing noise and are usually remedied prior to overheating and
resultant big $ damage.
I do certainly agree that changing the belt/pump/pulley is a good idea if you are
in there to change any of them.

You snipped too soon. My point was: even if the timing belt would go 100,000
mi, the water pump probably won't. If either fails, it's a head rebuild and
major $. So, be sure and change the pump with the belt.
