Car Phone Microphone Inop

The gremlins are slowly but surely being evicted form my new 1990 V8q.
Just had my phone activated which is the standard Audi phone package in
1990 with the hands-free microphone mounted in the drivers side pillar.
Everything seems to work except the microphone. Have not begun to
troubleshoot yet. I do have all the original dealer manuals for the
phone and have tried all potential combinations to make sure that the
microphone is not muted! A friend has the 1991 200q and he has a
different style microphone extending from the top of the pillar that
resembles an aftermarket microphone. Was there problems with the
integral microphone in 1990?
