Questions about pistons
Audi's special trick (referred to as "oil overpressure" by Phil Payne)
lunched the five exhaust valves in my main '87 5KTQ. The Audi kiss created
some interesting marks in the tops of the pistons.
I had planned to use the new set of pistons in a spare engine, but just
found out that it is a 2.1, I thought it had been bored to be a 2.2. So those
pistons won't work in this engine. (To answer the obvious question, the
bottom end of the spare engine was trashed when I bought it - looks like it
was rebuilt by a 'quick lube' mechanic.)
I had hoped to rehone and go in with the 'new' pistons/rings. I prefer
not to bore if I can avoid it, but I know how. Does anyone have a set of
pistons for sale? Need to be standard for 2.2 turbo, or larger.
On the other hand, I could put the 2.2 bottom end under the 2.1 pistons
in the backup engine. Will the 2.1 engine take to higher boost as well as the
2.2 turbo? Guess this question goes to folk with '85 and older turbo engines.
Anyone BTDT? This is probably the quickest way back to the road, but will the
5% difference in capacity make a difference in performance?
A third option I am considering is having someone cut valve reliefs in
the tops of the pistons I have. The current 'kiss' marks will make a great
guide for determining where to put them. This would drop the compression
ratio slightly, which can be compensated for by boost. Comments,
recommendations about this are welcome.
Anyway, things are progressing in Bucksnort.
Later.
