Because the likes of Ford and GM have lots of muscle and don't, by and large,
innovate.
Look at how the Ford fans praise the Mustang - it's because, in the 28 years
since it launched, Ford has done nothing better. Examples of innovation (like
the Mustang) are very scarce from the big players. It frightens them - they
have more engineers to re-train, more outlets to stock, etc.
Porsche can't afford _not_ to innovate, and because their whole operation is
smaller (and, dare I say it - smarter) they can do it. Audi's whole approach
is based on "Vorsprung durch Technik".
Motor racing is more and more a field in which I don't expect to see
innovation. I expect 'ra ra', sponsorship, driver competition, etc.
