Because the likes of Ford and GM have lots of muscle and don't, by and large,
innovate.

Look at how the Ford fans praise the Mustang - it's because, in the 28 years 
since it launched, Ford has done nothing better.  Examples of innovation (like 
the Mustang) are very scarce from the big players.  It frightens them - they 
have more engineers to re-train, more outlets to stock, etc.
 
Porsche can't afford _not_ to innovate, and because their whole operation is 
smaller (and, dare I say it - smarter) they can do it.  Audi's whole approach 
is based on "Vorsprung durch Technik".
 
Motor racing is more and more a field in which I don't expect to see 
innovation.  I expect 'ra ra', sponsorship, driver competition, etc.
