"Bang-bang steering" solved
I've been off list for a little while, but a few weeks ago I posted a problem
that surfaced immediately, when I took my 87 5kcstq out after replacing the PS
pump. What I found, may come in useful to someone in the future.
Symptoms:
1) Metallic vibration/clanking when riding on rough surfaces/bumps
2) Banging thru the steering column when turning
3) Blower motor wouldn't work
Of coarse #3 was due a multi-strike Audi-god lightning bolt (original
motor!!!), or maybe it was El Nino.
I found the top ring of the dr. side coil spring had broken off and was caught
in the remaining coil, creating the metallic vibration. The jagged upper end
of the coil spring was then catching/releasing with a bang against the damper
due to the torque of the steering.
I replaced the coils with stock used from Eric's VW, and the next day there's
a post from a company selling the lowering springs at what looks like a good
price!!! Might get em anyway.
