Someone suggested that the knock sensor was basically a microphone.
After looking at the schematic in the Bentley, I must concur. Looks
like a condensor microphone.

No, can't say as I do. But I think I'll chance it this weekend and 
remove it and try to fix the breaks. Weather permitting.
