Steve:

I think that the split boots are absolutely awful!  The category (IMO)
they fall in is _not_ a fix.

I put a small cut in one of my outer boots not too long ago when I had
the strut housing out for other things. Anyway, I cleaned the outside
of the boot thoroughly with a good grease cutter, roughed it up a bit
with sand paper, and dabbed some RTV sealant on it. Holding just fine
after more than 10K miles.
