Pinking ur quattro - update

I asked my garage again about the pinking following the suggestions on this
list.  The first thing they said is that my car doesn't have a knock sensor.
They are now suggesting that it could be that a breather has collapsed in the
rocker cover causing pinking and puffs of smoke under certain driving
conditions.  This is because oil gets into the inlet manifold or something?
They say I need to buy a new rocker cover.
