Picture this : Ingolstadt, early 1989 -
"Excuse me Heinrich, but what are the funny looking engines in the crates at
the back of the building?"
"Funny looking engines?"
"Yes, they have so many pipes that they look like small oil refineries.
There's about 50 of them."
"Ahh.. Herr Direktor! Willie has found those MB engines that we lost, what
shall we do with them?"
"We'll put them in the next run of righthand drive bodies and then sell them
to the British........."
It happens - in 1980 a firm (not a motor manufacturer) that I worked for did
something similar to use up some stock. The result turned out to be the best
selling model that the firm ever produced, unfortunately it arrived too late
to stop the firm folding 6 months later.
