Rebuild, engines FS, etc.
Well, after dinking around with the thing for a while, I decided to put
the rebuild on delay. The engine in the black 5K is almost out, about ten
more bolts and it's free. Then it will go on a stand, and the rebuild will
semi-start. I'll finish the pull down and start checking all the tolerances.
But I called DAD's in California yesterday. They had a 1991 turbo with
77K miles on it. Compression was 160+ on all five cylinders. They'll put it
on a truck Monday. By the time it gets here I'll have the old engine on a
stand and the steering rack redone. Hopefully I'll have it back in the car
and running before too much longer.
What this means is that I will have two '85 vintage turbo engines for
sale. One has about 120K on it. I've gotten the head off, looks pretty good
throughout. Did not pull the pan, thus have not looked at the bearings in the
bottom. I have all the "stuff" to go with this one, turbo, intercooler, ECU,
etc. This would make a good one for someone who wants to upgrade from N/A to
turbo.
The second one is a different story. The car had about 140K on it, but
this engine was rebuilt. Judging from the looks of things it was probably
done by a shade-tree Chevy mechanic who had never been inside an Audi before.
The block, pistons, and rods are useful, the crank will need to be turned.
Actually, the pistons look like they were new when this was rebuilt. (The
head is questionable since someone managed to score the cam journals and thus
the top part of the head.) So this is being offered as a short block that
needs the crank turned.
If anyone has interest in either of these, let me know. They are near
Bucksnort, TN. I have some connections and can get them shipped by one of the
freight carriers out of Nashville.
FWIW, I had originally picked these two up as backup engines. The
Bentley is ambiguous about when the bore diameter was changed for the turbo
engine. As I read it, I thought bore for the '85s was supposed to be the same
as for the '87s. Since I have two calipers and the heads off all three
engines, I now know better. I also know there is a difference in the cams as
well.
Later.
