RE: Advice needed

Craig,
IMO your best choice is '91 200 avant (this means wagon) quattro 20V. This
is the only (in USA) model year when 20 valve engines were installed in 200
series."Practical" and "sports" in not an oxymoron in case of this car -
it's fast even in stock form and can be made *very* fast by installing
performance computer chip. Age should not be a problem, as these cars are
totally rustproof and mechanicals are very durable, provided the car has
been properly maintained. These cars were offered with manual transmission
_only_. Wagons are rare though, so expect some trouble finding one for sale.

Why S4s and S6s are so expensive? Well, they are rare, were very expensive
when new and have opinion of probably the fastest stock Audis ever built.
However, 20V 200s are almost as fast as S4 for much lower price and I
personally like the old chassis better. Besides, you have very little
chances of finding an S4 wagon in USA.
