Harmonic Balancer

Hi all:

The below is cut from a message I received off of a Jeep Cherokee list.
I have often (well sometimes) wondered about this on my beloved Audi.
Anybody hear of this happening or think it might?

...the outer and inner rings of my harmonic balancer/vibration damper
had separated and the outer ring had walked towards the engine into
the timing chain cover and tore right through it...
