Origin of 100E

Saw a 100 that I am not 100% familiar with:

Audi 100E:

Looks like a stripped down 100, as my friend's encyclopedia of import cars
would attest.  Only problem, this encyclopedia (the name escapes me) is
often wrong, so I wanted more info just for kicks.

No automatic climate control, no alloy wheels, cloth seats.  Looks like a
cross between a 4k and a 5k...

Just wondering,
