Re: S4/91 200: which is faster?

Here are some numbers and info to chew on:

If we assume a curb weight (no driver) of 3850 lbs for the S4 with 227HP
and 3650 lbs for the 1991 200TQ with 217HP, the 1991 200TQ 20V is at
16.82 lbs/HP, the S4 is at 16.96 lbs/HP,

The 1986-90 5000TQ/200TQ at 3450lbs would only need 205HP to be at the
same lb/HP rating.

The 1995 BMW M3 at 3150lbs with 240HP comes in at 13.1 lbs/HP.

The S4 needs 293HP to meet the M3 weight/HP, the 200TQ 20V needs 278HP,
the 5000/200TQ needs 263HP.

Looks like I need to go on a diet.....

Does anyone have other test numbers for the 1/4 mile ET for the 1991
200TQ and the S4? These are the only numbers I have.

Road and Track Dec. 90 magazine shows the 1991 200TQ 20V to have a 15.4
sec at 88.5MPH, (This seems a little slow)

Car and Driver April 1992 shows the S4 to have a 1/4 mile ET of 14.9 sec
at 94MPH.

Turbo Magazine Jan 1996 shows Scott Lampkins stock S4 to have a 1/4 mile
ET of 14.98 at 94MPH. With Hoppen mods and 290HP (Vericom derived), it
had a 1/4 mile ET of 14.0 sec at 98 MPH.

Road and Track Jan. 1991 shows the European S2 at 3130 lbs, with 220HP
to have a 1/4 ET of 14.6 sec at 96.5MPH

Road/Track Feb 1995 shows the M3 to have an 1/4 mile ET of 14.1 sec at
99.5 MPH.

Someone mentioned that the US S4 is "missing" a gear from the 6 speed
European transmission and this explains its poor top end performance. I
don't know where that came from, the info below doesn't seem to verify
this. Is there another 6 speed that was used during this time?

The 1991 200TQ 20V shows the final drive to be 4.11 to 1, (1st to 5th
gears) 3.60, 2.13, 1.36, 0.97, 0.73

Road and Track Jan. 1991 shows the European S2 with a 5 speed 4.11 to 1
Final Drive with (1st to 5th gears) 3.5, 1.84, 1.22, 0.90, 0.71

According to Car and Driver April 1992, the S4 gear ratios are shown to
be Final Drive 4.11 to 1, (1st to 5th gears) 3.50, 1.89, 1.23, 0.99,
0.73 Note: European car shows 4th gear to be 0.93 for the S4.

The 1994 RS2 fiche shows the 6 speed tranny to have a 4.11 to 1 final
drive,(1st to 6th gears), 3.5, 1.89, 1.32, 1.03, 0.86, 0.71

1994 S2, S2 Avant, Coupe S2, German Audi brochure shows all three to
have the 6 speed tranny with 4.11 to 1 final drive,
(1st to 6th gears), 3.5, 1.89, 1.32, 1.03, 0.86, 0.71

The 1996 S6 (Sedan and Avant) parts fiche shows the 2.2 liter (230HP) to
use the DPH 6 speed transmission with 4.11 to 1 Final Drive,
(1st to 6th gears), 3.5, 1.89, 1.32, 1.03, 0.86, 0.73

The 1996 S6 + with 4.2 liter V8 uses the CMG tranny and has 4.11 to 1
FD, (1st to 6th gears), 3.5, 1.89, 1.32, 1.03, 0.81, 0.68

The A6 with 2.5TDI shows the use of the DPJ tranny with 4.11 to 1 FD,
(1st to 6th gears) 3.5, 1.89, 1.32, 1.03, 0.67, 0.56

What can we deduce from all of this, uh, Audi has lots of gears in their
parts department...

Your mileage may vary...
