Koni broke why?

Can't be hard,

It can't be too hard to find out why a shock died. If it is a matter of
seals leaking or something along those lines then it probably has certain
kinds of marks or wear or whatever inside.

If it died or leaks or has a bent shaft you can be pretty sure they can
tell when they open it up that the shock has been to the limit of it's
travel and wished it had some more.

I do think they can tell what failed and why when they gut these things.
IF they gut these things.

I still think they used to have a pretty generous replacement policy. The
did the math. Why you must show registration is unknown to me. Maybe
they don't want to replace parts for a STREET car when it has been on an
unregistered RACE car?

To save a reciept isn't too much of a stretch for the consumer to do.
