The MB (TORSEN) ur-quattro is NOTHING LIKE a FWD car. Chalk and cheese.
Absolutely no resemblance in any way at all. Our 'other' car is a FWD Passat
with an I5 - utterly different beast in every way. FWIW - this is the list
of major changes between the 1987 WR ur-quattro and the 1987 MB:
1988 - Chassis Number - JA 900... and 1989 - Chassis Number KA 900
In October 1987 the 2226 cc MB Engine replaced the previous WR engine -
fitted with smaller turbo cooled by oil and water, torque sensing
(TORSEN) centre differential, limited-slip rear differential, new ABS
design with accelerometer. New idle stabilisation system. The fuel
injection system was completely overhauled, with a new metering head -
the warm-up regulator was no longer vacuum controlled, and system
pressure was regulated by a separate valve. A frequency valve provided
ECU control of full-throttle enrichment. A dashpot was fitted to the
throttle valve to delay throttle closure, allowing the new type of idle
stabilisation valve time to react. Wastegate now controlled by inlet
pressure, but ultimately overridden by computer switching air from
either end of the turbo into plenum chamber previously open to
atmosphere. New steering and brake assist design, using a tandem pump
with a hydraulic oil cooler in the steering circuit. Hydraulic
self-adjusting tappets were used, and only one oil filter was fitted.
Body remained the same as earlier model. Minor changes were made to the
interior including a switch to lock the rear limited-slip differential
at speeds too low for the mechanism to work on its own, and a new orange
digital dashboard with an electronic odometer and no boost gauge.
