There was no center diff (solid shaft).
This way they were able to make the tranny shorter and save some weight.
According to "Quattro Development and Competition History"
BTW the subject line gives me a headache. At school we call
Differential Equations (Calculus) Diffy-q's. Horrable stuff.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
