Nick:
I don't know about CA but here in CT, you, as the original owner have first
rights to the salvage of the vehicle. That means that for $250.00 you can
"buy " the car back from the insurance company. With all the improvements
you have made to the car, I would exercise that right. There is obviously
far more value to the car, even as it sits, than $250. If you don't buy
the car the insurance company will sell it off to the highest bidder (they
will usually get a lot more than the $250.00 they are quoting) and keep
the profit to help pay for their "loss". Why shouldn't you get a crack at
that money. After all, if you find another car this car will be able to
donate many parts to make that car as good as the one that you had.
Finally when you've transplanted all the parts you want off the car into
another one, you can sell what's left on this list to people who really
need some of those valuable parts.
The only catch of course is that you nneed a place to keep the car while
you are parting/donating it out.
Hopefully you have the same "rights" in CA as I do in CT.
