Stock radio? Not? Separate amp? I got rid of a whine by rerouting my signal
cables from head unit to trunk amp (bad place: center driveshaft tunnel; good
place: under door molding on driver's side, but watch out for rear defroster
wires)

If it's a Fuba like on a GTI 16v, the top unscrews from the base somewhere.
I've never noted movement in mine, so hopefully it's rusted and non-thievable.

1988 GTI 16v, 174k, I hear stories of these Fubas going bad but mine's still
working fine
