I just emailed the author, and realized the moment I pressed the
button to send what EM was.  In my younger daze playing with cars
this happened to me several times.  I have since learned that if
there is any question at all about the nut and stud in question,
I take a mini chisel and hack, ever so carefully, the blessed
thing off.  Sometimes access can be a problem though.
