RE: REVERSE GEAR

Reverse gear is typically very loud as compared to all of the forward gears.
Reverse uses flat and efficient but noisy gears where forward gears are cut at an
angle. The angle cut sacrifices absolute strength for quiet operation. Full-race
transmissions typically use flat-cut gears all-around, strength and efficiency
are critical, noise is not.

On my 1988 90q, the reverse is only good up to (about 12mph). I mean I
don't need to go much faster than that but it is the only gear that is
really loud When I'm backing up and I think the whole neighborhood could
hear it. My question is, is it time for a rebuild? (or partial rebuild)?
any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
