Al;

My '87 5KCSTQ did this very thing last month, with the exception of
the anti-lock light coming on. This condition lasted two days. Then
at 6 AM one morning when it was -10 degrees F, I was going down the
Maine turnpike at 80mph when the engine just stopped. Very
disconcerting. Bad fuel pump.

I should have paid attention to the warning I was given for two days
before it died. During the two days previous the engine would
sputter and then die. I would have to wait about 10-15 minutes then
it would start again. The fuel pump was also a bit louder than
usual in the morning on cold start-up.

And just to show that it can be something very simple and easily overlooked, I
had the same problem with my RX-7 in Germany. I had an American specs car
which made it difficult for the German mechanics to rule certain things out,
as there is a lot of emissions control stuff on the US version just not
present on the German model (solenoids, tubing, etc.) The car would cut out
at odd times (once on the autobahn doing 120 mph.) This would happen at least
every two weeks. They checked the fuel pump and carb but couldn't find
anything wrong (of course, it would never cut out on *them*.)

Finally I couldn't take the uncertainty anymore and I sold the car (I LOVED
that car.) The first thing the guy did was pull the gas tank and, sure
enough, there was a piece of newpaper in it that had been passed somehow
through a gas pump. It would float around in there and on occasion, would be
drawn to the exit pipe of the tank and be forced against it by pump pressure.
It was chance as to whether it would be cleared immediately or not. Sometimes
the car would restart and sometimes it would be drawn down again.

So, you might have some trash in your tank and it's worth looking into
(although I realize that it's not a particularly cheap thing to have done.)
Believe me, it can happen. It happened to me!
