Inner shift boot - warning

Q -

I took the leather shift boot off my car to get a look at the shift linkage.
I found something interesting/disturbing that others may want to be aware
of.

Inside the leather shift boot is a rubber liner (at least on my car). Well,
my rubber liner had ripped and was slowly disintegrating, depositing a
handful of ground-up rubber all over the shifter linkage. Terrible mess. I'm
not sure if it was doing any damage, but it sure as hell wasn't helping.

I'm not sure what the purpose of the rubber liner is anyway, so I removed it
and put the leather back on without it.
